3 080203 Mechanical Design and Theory
The discipline aims to produce professionals (at master of engineering level) who will work on mechanical design, mechanical system performance analysis, statics/kinetics analysis and calculation of mechanical & architectural structure and related theory research.
As a broad concept, machinery refers to both machines and structures. The application and related theories of machines and structures develop constantly due to the ever-changing market demands. To adapt to the development, researchers and design professionals have to update their knowledge accumulation continuously so as to outpace such development. The discipline does not focus on one particular type of machinery as the object of its training mode; instead, researchers and design professionals are required to lay solid and wide knowledge base so that they may quickly acquire new knowledge, find new methods and complete new tasks efficiently when assigned a new task. Such knowledge base includes: mechanics of elasticity; modern vibration theory; tribology; advanced mechanical design; finite element method; fundamentals of computer and network technology, fundamentals of mathematics/physics/chemistry; foreign language proficiency for communication with foreigners.
In order to convert mechanical design into productivity, mechanical manufacturing is a necessity. Besides, movement control of machines and structures requires electronic technology. Therefore, this discipline and two other disciplines, namely “Mechanical Manufacturing & Automation” and “Mechanical & Electrical Engineering”, depend on each other and combined constitute the fundamental component of class-A disciplines of the field of mechanical engineering.
