The scientific research bases of School of Mechanical Engineering include: 3 key laboratories of China Machinery Industry Federation, 1 Shanghai technology service platform and 1 Shanghai engineering technology research center.
1) Key laboratory for precision grinding technology in mechanical industry
In December 2007, with the approval of China Machinery Industry Federation, “key laboratory for precision grinding technology in mechanical industry” was created with USST and Shanghai Machine Tool Plant Co., Ltd. as the sponsors. The laboratory focuses on the following research tasks: key technology for precision/ultraprecision CNC grinding machine; optimal design of precision grinding machine parts; error measurement and control technology for CNC grinding machine; grinding mechanism and grinding process; thermal error measurement and compensation technology for grinding process; creation of research base for high-precision CNC grinding machine development and application; relevant key technologies. Over the past several years, the laboratory has undertaken over 30 key and major research projects at both national and provincial levels including 8 national major scientific and technological research projects on “ high-grade CNC machine tools and basic manufacturing equipment”. The laboratory has also obtained more than 20 national patents.
2) Key laboratory for strength and reliability evaluation of automotive chassis mechanical parts in mechanical industry
In June 2010, with the approval of China Machinery Industry Federation, “key laboratory for strength and reliability evaluation of automotive chassis mechanical parts in mechanical industry” was created with USST as the sponsor. The laboratory now has 11 professors. The major task of the laboratory is to provide technical theories and guidance for over 10 independent R&D programs for automotive parts, and develop relevant testing equipment. Over the past several years, the laboratory has undertaken over 40 key and major research projects at both national and provincial levels and has obtained national authorized invention patents.
Research areas of the laboratories include: lightweight design technology for automotive parts; research on strength and reliability evaluation rules for automotive parts; recycling and utilization technology for automotive parts; rapid simulation test technology for automotive parts; development technology for automotive parts strength and reliability testing equipment.
3) Key laboratory for CNC machine tools optimization technology in mechanical industry
In December 2010, with the approval of China Machinery Industry Federation, “key laboratory for CNC machine tools optimization technology in mechanical industry” was created with USST as the sponsor. By adopting industry-academia-research cooperation mode, the laboratory, on the basis of modern design technology and dynamic performance analysis and testing technology for machine tools, focuses on key common technology for CNC machine tool design and processing techniques and conducts technological research work on the following three areas for the purpose of shortening design duration, reducing equipment manufacturing cost and improving equipment performance: dynamic performance testing and analysis for machine tools; CNC processing techniques optimization technology; optimization design methods for CNC machine tools.
4) Shanghai CNC machine tool optimization technology service platform
USST Technology Transfer Co., Ltd. is the sponsor of Shanghai CNC machine tool optimization technology service platform and Mechanical Industry Machine Tool Products Quality Test Center (Shanghai) is the partner of the platform. The technology service platform is committed to transforming the technological know-how and strengths of USST on CNC technology research into productivity, promoting the development of teaching and research work of USST and providing a professional technology service platform for CNC machine tools manufacturers and users. Mechanical Industry Machine Tool Products Quality Test Center (Shanghai) , the platform’s partner, is the only institution in East China which has the qualifications for CNC machine tools test and is also a professional test institution focusing on quality supervision and performance testing for machine tools related products. Shanghai CNC machine tool optimization technology service platform introduces the “4s” concepts from car sales into technical services for CNC machine tools so as to provide comprehensive technical services for CNC machine tool users.
5) Shanghai CNC Equipment Engineering Technology Research Center
“Shanghai CNC Equipment Engineering Technology Research Center” was created in 2010 with a the approval of Shanghai Science and Technology Commission. The center was jointly built by USST and Central Research Institute of Shanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd. The center focuses on key technology research for CNC equipment in order to meet high-tech products development needs of Shanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd.. The center is also committed to the research on the following areas: development and application core technology for middle/high-grade CNC system; key technology for design of precision CNC equipment; optimization technology for high-efficient and high-precision processing techniques; fault alarm and diagnosis technology for major CNC equipment.
