After many years of development, School of Mechanical Engineering of USST currently focuses on five research areas, i.e., NC machining technology (the core area), modern mechanical design, modern design of vehicle components, virtual manufacturing and electrical engineering. The School has also developed unique strengths in areas such as precision grinding, bionic optimization design, vehicle strength and reliability design, precision measurement and intelligent control. The School has made remarkable achievements in research work over the past years. During the 12th Five-Year Plan period, the School undertakes 417 research programs and receives research funding of RMB 76.05 million with RMB 26.71 million in funding for vertical projects. A total of 940 scientific and technological papers have been published, among which 275 papers were published in USST designated class-A journals along with 52 SCI papers and 51 EI papers. A total of 17 academic books and textbooks were also published. The School has obtained 105 patents for invention. The School has undertaken 5 national-level major scientific and technological projects, 1 national science and technology support program and 1 national key R&D project. During the process, the School has achieved landmark results: “key technology research and clinical transformation for dynamic memory stress driven war wound healing” won second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award; “key technology and engineering application for core equipment of deep sea oil and gas exploitation system” won first prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award; “key technology and application for high-speed and heavy-duty traction elevator” won second prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award; “key technology and multi-field application for bionic principles-based lightweight design of mechanical structure” won second prize of Shanghai Technical Invention Award; “key technical research and application for equipment structure lightweight” won second prize of China Mechanical Science and Technology Award. These results serve as examples for the industry players, and signify the efforts of the School in becoming a first-class research base in China.
