School of Mechanical Engineering Delivered 2020 Training Sessions to Mechanical Design, Manufacture & Automation (Sino-German Joint Program) Majors Prior to Their Trip to Germany
On the afternoon of September 24, School of Mechanical Engineering delivered the third round of training sessions to nearly 50 students and their parents before their departure to Germany. The sessions took place in Conference Room 227 in the Mechanical Building. The students, enrolled in 2017, are mechanical design, manufacture & automation (a Sino-German joint program) majors. Themed “tips for high school students on how to live and study abroad after pandemic”, the training sessions were offered online and offline simultaneously. Xi Wei, chief physician from Yangpu District Mental Health Center, was invited to offer on-site guidance. Fang Li, head in charge of Chinese program for HFU joint program, and Chen Yitian, an outstanding member of class enrolled in 2016, were reached on-site via remote connection. Wu Xiaoyi, program specialist, and Lü Juan, mechanical related foreign affairs specialist, hosted the event. The two-hour-plus discussion provided a deep and meaningful experience for teachers and students.
Xi Wei, as a doctor, gave a lecture on how to win the pandemic fight psychologically, and how to interpret the infection coefficient of COVID-19 virus and the protective effect of mask. Xi Wei also offered four suggestions on how to ensure medical protection and psychological well-being during the trip to Germany and during the stay in Germany. The four suggestions are: gain a proper understanding of pandemic prevention related knowledge and abide by the local pandemic prevention requirements, keep social distance for more effective pandemic prevention, protect oneself during the trip; try to overcome anxiety, stick to normal routine so as to prevent depletion of personal energy, keep life feeling as normal as possible is the best way to fight virus; entertainment, sports and online socializing are three ways to deal with negative emotions, find solutions from past experience to respond to emergency; cultural conflict occurs earlier than expected due to the pandemic and observing the local customs is one way to handle cultural conflict; understanding the difference between the Chinese people and the westerners in their views of the function of mask (whether it’s self-defense or defense of others) can help students better handle similar issues.
Fang Li provided information on the conditions of the campus and the neighborhood, and urged teachers, students and parents to take self-protection seriously even though the pandemic is already under control, and suggested that students take medical masks along with them even though Germany can supply enough masks. Fang Li also provided information on issues including airport pickup, ride from airport to place of residence, formalities for residence permit and bank card, self-quarantine, online classes and offline classes, internship and experiments, research at companies, completion of academic work, rules on taking vacation, and visa extension.
Chen Yitian shared information on HFU campus facilities, neighborhood facilities, daily necessities supply, refuse classification and apartment management rules, appliances to be taken and postgraduate application process. Chen Yitian also recommended four to five ways for learning such as theoretical lessons, field study, online open courses and HFU-Felix, and encourage students to ask questions during class, prepare lessons before class, share study materials with each other, and hone language skills. Instructor Wu Xiaoyi focused on students supervision system and rules, and asked each student to designate an emergency contact. Wu Xiaoyi asked student Party members to play an exemplary role and student leaders to take care of routine management and coordination work. Wu Xiaoyi also provided instructions on how to handle matters regarding different groups of students who would go to Germany successively and graduates based in China and Germany respectively.
Mechanical Design, Manufacture & Automation (International Engineering) is a long-term program jointly created by USST and Hochschule Furtwangen University (HFU). The program is operated successfully this year despite the pandemic. As graduates based in Germany started to return to China and students enrolled in 2016 who remained in Germany continued to send good news, more students would go to Germany. These students are the fourth group of students admitted to the university, the largest in number. As the pandemic is currently under control, the training sessions are offered so that students who would study in Germany may obtain useful information, and build courage and self-confidence.
