On October 13, 2017, a total of 19 exchange students from Germany who study at the School of Mechanical Engineering visited Shanghai City Planning Exhibition Hall and Shanghai Museum along with Chinese students who participated in “one-on-one mutual assistance” program.

Shanghai City Planning Exhibition Hall is an exhibition building showcasing city planning and construction achievements of Shanghai. Located at No. 100 People’s Avenue, the exhibition hall covers an areas of over 4000 sq.m. and has a height of 43.3 meters with 5 floors above ground and 2 floors underground.

Shanghai originally was a small county since the Qing Dynasty. With passing of the years, Shanghai wrote new chapters in its development and has grown into an international metropolis. The students viewed historical archives and photographs of each stage of Shanghai’s development. The panoramic sand table model (with 1:500 scale) for the inner ring of Shanghai which is presented on the third floor is the best way to gain a whole picture of Shanghai. Using the sand table model, the guide gave an account of the landmark buildings and cultural characteristics of each area of the city. The students then enjoyed a “magical journey in Shanghai” in the multifunctional virtual theatre. Through 360° 3D animation demonstration, the students got an overall impression of the urban pace and modern feel of the beautiful city of Shanghai. The overall planning hall on the 4th floor showcases all the plans formulated for the future development of Shanghai including short-term/medium-term construction planning, deep-water harbor, air harbor and inforport, development of Huangpu River and comprehensive management of Suzhou River. Students were allowed to touch and use high-tech virtual display equipment of the exhibition hall.

After leaving Shanghai City Planning Exhibition Hall, the students went to visit Shanghai Museum viewing works of art exhibited in exhibition areas for bronze vessels, earthenware, jade articles, calligraphy & paintings and sculpture.

By visiting the two sites, the students acquired basic knowledge of city construction and planning. They looked back on the history of Shanghai and looked to the future in Shanghai’s city planning. They also had a chance to see valuable cultural relics from ancient times. The visit helped students gain knowledge and allowed them to learn more about Shanghai, a city they love more after the visit.
